NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Seattle Washington
330 PM PST Friday Feb 12 2016

Synopsis...an upper level trough will move inland tonight for
additional showers. A warm front will bring rain Saturday afternoon
through Sunday evening. Moist westerly flow aloft will continue
through early next week.

&&

Short term...onshore flow has increased behind a cold front this
afternoon. There are showers across the area with a few breaks in
between. We had a few thunderstorms as well...off Neah Bay. Showers
will increase in coverage tonight as the upper level trough axis
moves inland. The trough axis is currently near 130w and the infrared
satellite show a good batch of convective looking cells.

There will be a break in the action Saturday morning...then rain
increasing toward the afternoon and evening as the next warm front
moves in. This is another juicy system and rain will be heavy at
times along the coast...at least another 1 inch of rain expected.
The Olympics may see 1-3 inches of rain with snow levels rising to
around 6000 feet. The Skokomish River is already running high and
will issue a Flood Watch for Mason County. Rain amounts will be less
in the central sound Saturday night with westerly downslope winds
off the Olympics. Rain amounts in the Seattle metropolitan will be 0.25-
0.50 inches through Saturday night.

Moist westerly flow will prevail Sunday and Monday as a another warm
front stalls then shifts north into southern British Columbia. The
air mass will remain mild with temperatures mainly in the 50s. Snow levels
will range from 5000-7000 feet and rain will again be heavy at times
along the coast and in the mountains. A few rivers in the north
Cascades will rise close to flood stage. 33

Long term...moist westerly flow will continue through Tuesday but
models disagree on whether the warm frontal band will fizzle out or
not. The GFS is currently wetter than the European model (ecmwf). Both the GFS and
European model (ecmwf) show an upper level trough digging offshore then moving inland
on Wednesday or Thursday. But again the GFS is much wetter with the
trough. The European model (ecmwf) bring the trough inland farther south with little
impact over western Washington. For now will continue with a blend of the
models through this point. The forecast details remain low through
the end of next week as the model solutions diverge. 33

&&

Hydrology...there is potential for heavy rain over the Olympics
Saturday night which may push the Skokomish River in Mason County
over flood stage. A Flood Watch is in effect.

A warm front will stall over southern b.C. Or western Washington Sunday
through Monday...possibly into Tuesday. Heavy rain is forecast in
the north Cascades and a few rivers will be close to flood stage. A
hydrologic outlook will be issued. 33

&&

Aviation...an upper trough axis will pass eastward across western Washington
tonight...leading to a moist and slightly unstable air mass.
Colder air aloft has led to some weak convective showers this
afternoon...focused most distinctly near the coast and in a Puget Sound sound
convergence zone near the Skagit/Snohomish County line. Showers
should die die out after sunset with the loss of daytime heating.
Passage of the upper trough will bring a more widespread round of
showers late this evening and overnight. A lull in rain early Sat
morning...then more rain and lower ceilings arriving around 15z-18z Sat
in advance of a warm front.

Ksea...weak convective showers moving from SW to NE in the
vicinity of the terminal right now. These showers will die off
around sunset with the loss of daytime heating...reducing the risk
of ceilings below 030 during evening rush. Another round of showers and
ceilings below 020 expected overnight around 09z-11z as an upper trough
axis passes by. A break in rain from 12z-18z Sat...then more rain
will arrive in advance of an incoming warm front.

&&

Marine...moderate southerly gradients will prevail tonight.
A warm front will cross the waters on Sat afternoon and evening...
preceded by a period of strong southeast gradients. Another front will
cross the waters on Sunday...followed by a push of SW gradients on
Sunday afternoon and Sunday night. Moderate southerly gradients
will prevail Monday and Tuesday.
