NWS Forecaster Discussion

Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Seattle Washington
918 PM PDT Wednesday Apr 1 2015

Synopsis...an upper level trough over western Washington combined
with onshore flow will give showers overnight and a chance of
thunderstorms until midnight. Showers will diminish on Thursday as a
weak upper level ridge moves across the area. A frontal system will
affect the area on Friday. An upper low will maintain a chance of
showers through the weekend.

&&

Short term...an upper level trough extends southward from east
central British Columbia into western Oregon while a weak 500 mb
ridge is sitting just west of 130w. In the meantime...a surface
ridge of high pressure along 130w combined with lower pressure east
of the Cascades is giving low level onshore flow. With the unstable
air mass in place and the northwest flow aloft interacting with the
Olympics...showers and a few thunderstorms have been observed in a
convergence zone in the Seattle area. There have been a few spotter
reports of small pea-sized hail covering the ground at times in the
heavier showers since this afternoon.

Both the 00z nam12 and the 02z hrrr show the air mass remaining
rather unstable overnight into Thursday morning. The hrrr shows
showers and thunderstorms over King County decreasing after about 06z...then
shows an increase in activity from the central Cascades northwest through
Snohomish County during the late evening hours as convergence off
the southeast tip of Vancouver Island initiates convection there.
The hrrr continues to show the convergence zone activity from about
Stevens Pass to around Everett through the morning hours on
Thursday. Despite a weak passing upper ridge on Thursday...the GFS
keeps heights rather low Thursday afternoon...and convective
temperatures in the upper 40s should easily be reached. So will
update the forecasts for tonight into Thursday in the interior to
account for higher probability of precipitation in the convergence zone area and Cascades
overnight into early Thursday morning and to include a slight chance
to chance of showers from the Olympics south and eastward Thursday
afternoon. Temperature and sky forecasts look good through Thursday.

Precipitation ahead of an incoming cold front will reach the coast
late Thursday night and will slide inland on Friday. Snow levels in
the mountains will generally be around 3000 feet through the period
and the mountains will likely see a few inches of snow.

An upper level low in the Gulf of Alaska will drop southeastward on
Saturday and will reach the Washington and Oregon coastal waters on
Sunday. Some diurnal showers on Saturday -mainly in the mountains-
will likely give way to an increase in shower activity on Sunday as
the low gets closer to the area and the upper levels destabilize.
Snow levels will likely remain around 3000 feet through the weekend
and lowland temperatures will stay cool with lows around 40 and
highs in the lower to middle 50s. Albrecht

Long term...from the previous long term discussion...the air mass
will remain cool and unstable through early next week as an upper
level low spins overhead. This system will continue to bring
moisture to western Washington for a chance of showers each day. Not much
has changed in the forecast over this period. By Wednesday the
models are now showing the low moving farther inland while a ridge
starts to build over the Pacific northwest. So look for drier weather by
Wednesday if this pattern pans out. Beyond then the models start to
diverge. 33

&&

Aviation...an upper trough over the region will continue moving east
overnight and will be followed by an upper ridge. Northwest flow aloft will
become northerly. Continued low level onshore flow.

The air mass was still unstable enough for isolated thunderstorms over the
interior late this evening. The stronger thunderstorms will likely
contain small hail. Expect the air mass to gradually stabilize
overnight...with the risk of thunderstorms ending about 0800 UTC.

Anticipate areas of ceilings in the 1-3k feet range overnight. Rain showers
could reduce visibilities briefly down into the 3-5sm range.

Ksea...it looks like the risk of thunderstorms was diminishing but there
will be a continued threat of showers overnight. Ceilings will likely lift
back up into VFR category before lowering back into the 2-3k feet
range late tonight or early Thursday morning. Of course...any showers
will also lower ceilings into the MVFR category range as well as
briefly reduce visibilities into the 3-5sm range.

&&

Marine...
high pressure over the coastal waters with lower pressure east of the
Cascades will result in onshore or westerly flow overnight. The
flow will become southerly on Thursday in response to high pressure
building over western Washington. Look for a frontal system to
approach the area Thursday night and then move across the region on
Friday.

&&

Sew watches/warnings/advisories...
Washington...none.
Pz...small craft advisories are in effect until 5 am Thursday for
the central/eastern Strait of Juan Delaware fuca and the
coastal waters from Cape Flattery to Cape Shoalwater from 10
nm out to 60 nm.
