NWS Forecaster Discussion
484 fxus64 klch 091221 afdlch Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Lake Charles la 621 am CST Friday Jan 9 2009 Aviation...buoy35 off High Island showing a water temperature of 60f. These shelf waters have been warming past few days...dew point also around 60s so no cross over and no sea fog. Generally water temperatures need to be in the 50s to set up the difference with a long southeasterly fetch from the warmer middle Gulf. This resulted in the maintenance of VFR at Beaumont this morning. Just to the east, terminals Lake Charles, Lafayette, and New Iberia are experiencing LIFR ceiling/visible in sea fog as waters there are cooler due in part to the cold Atchafalaya and Mississippi rivers and the easterly loop current. VFR by middle morning as south-southeast winds increase and become quite breezy with gusts to 20 knots. Alexandria could see brief MVFR ceilings from the edge of the stratus deck spreading north and slightly east. This stratus should erode away with increasing mixing from the stronger winds this morning. Expecting LIFR at Lake Charles, Lafayette, and New Iberia late tonight with a return of sea fog. Confidence lower on Beaumont due to the lack of sea fog this morning as shelf waters continue to warm. Left it in the taf due to MOS guidance and climatology. 11 && Previous discussion... /issued 439 am CST Friday Jan 9 2009/ Discussion... yesterday highs at Beaumont/Port Arthur including Lake Charles 76... Miami Beach 75...72 in Tampa. Single digits reported along the US Canadian border. A warm front has backed across the region this morning opening the area to Gulf moisture...as a result areas of dense fog has formed mainly along and south of the I-10 corridor with patchy dense fog elsewhere. Fog is expected to begin lifting after sunrise. Temperatures today will rise into the middle 70s under partly cloudy skies. Clouds will increase overnight ahead of a cold front that will push through the region around sunrise. Scattered showers to develop out ahead of the front tapering off behind the frontal passage. Cooler temperatures in store over the weekend with lows Sunday morning in the middle 30s and highs near 60. Gradual warm up during the first portion of the work week with a strong Canadian cold front to move down into the region late on Wednesday. Left mention of showers out of tafs late tnite due to possible capping and NGM MOS. && Preliminary point temps/pops... klch 62 66 36 59 38 / 40 50 10 0 0 kbpt 62 66 36 60 39 / 30 30 10 0 0 kaex 57 62 34 57 34 / 50 30 10 0 0 klft 63 67 38 57 35 / 30 50 10 0 0 && Lch watches/warnings/advisories... la...dense fog advisory until 9 am CST this morning for the following zones: Acadia...Calcasieu...Cameron...Iberia...Jefferson Davis...Lafayette...lower St. Martin...St. Mary...upper St. Martin...Vermilion.
