Area forecast discussion
National Weather Service Pocatello Idaho
347 am MST Friday Jan 9 2009

Short term...today through Sunday.
Upper trough and associated cold front have moved through southeast
Idaho but secondary upper trough sliding south currently with
isolated to scattered snow showers continuing in the southern
Highlands and upper Snake River Plain as radar showing echoes
increasing between Howe and Idaho Falls at 330 am. Went ahead and
put some isolated snow showers and scattered snow showers in Snake
River Plain and southern and eastern Highlands this morning as
radar and satellite loops which show cooling cloud tops in eastern
Idaho indicate some type of lift occurring as flow aloft turns
northerly. Do not expect much with this and kept amounts under an
inch. Cut out snow except along Wyoming border after 11 am.
Saturday and Sunday sees strong northwest flow aloft continuing
with perhaps some orographic light snows in central mountains and
eastern Highlands as moisture spills over top of upper ridge in
Pacific. Expect near seasonal temperatures today into Sunday with
perhaps some fog and stratus in Snake River Plain overnight
tonight and Saturday morning as low level moisture remains in
place.
Gk

Long term...Monday through Friday. Unseasonably strong high
pressure ridge remains along the West Coast with northwest flow
pattern brining a few showers through southeast Idaho. The ecm and
GFS focus one embedded disturbance coming over top of the ridge and
dropping southeast along The Divide Monday and another Tuesday night
and Wednesday. Expect a few showers Monday in the upper snake
Highlands and eastern Highlands with limited moisture...perhaps a
localized inch of snow. The ridge gains amplitude through Thursday
and successive disturbances coming through the ridge will be
progressively drier. Thursday night and Friday night the GFS brings
colder air southward from 60n with some slipping in on the west side
of The Divide while the ecm keeps the colder air mostly east of The
Divide. Current forecast trends a little cooler on those
mornings. Receiver station

&&

Aviation...short wave trough over southeast Idaho this morning
moving south to southeast of state by middle day. Westerly gusty winds
up to 35 miles per hour this morning are limited mainly south of a kbyi to ku78
line. These winds diminish through noon time as the trough moves
southeast. Isolated snow showers also linger mostly over the eastern
Highlands with local MVFR ceilings vicinity of those showers. Receiver station
