Area forecast discussion...updated
National Weather Service Peachtree City Georgia
520 am EST Thursday Jan 8 2009

Short term /today through Saturday/...
current satellite loop shows clouds moving in over north Georgia associated
with the wrap around moisture from the back side of the main low
center over the New England states. There is some virga showing up
on radar so some of the higher elevations in north Georgia may see some
precipitation this morning. Ceilings over north Georgia are in the 9000 to 12000ft
range so it may be a bit difficult it see much precipitation with the
clouds so high. Currently temperatures across north Georgia are to warm for snow so
if any precipitation does fall it should be all rain. Once this backside
moisture clears out a high pressure ridge builds in over Georgia and
keeps our area dry through Sat morning. A closed low center begins
to develop over the Central Plains late tonight and moves into the
Gulf Coats state Friday. It begins to deepen as it pushes across the
middle MS valley Friday afternoon and eventually swinging a front through
Georgia Sat. This looks like it will be our next shot of any precipitation and
it also looks like it will be all rain. This front has very little
instability with it but the sheer values look to be fairly strong.
This is mostly associated with a low level jet that moves through at
the same time but this jet is not expected to be as strong as what
we saw with wednesdays severe weather event. Will continue with
light rain in the forecast with no mention of thunderstorms and rain development.

Long term /Saturday night through Wednesday/...
the front that moves into our area Sat morning clear out of the
region by Sat night with another high pressure ride building in sun.
This ridge stays over our area sun and Monday before an Alberta clipper
dives southeast out of the northern High Plains Tuesday. This frontal
system does not have much moisture with it but it does unleashing a
considerably colder airmass across the eastern U.S. The models show
the cold airmass moving into Georgia Wednesday with a cold domed high pressure
ridge building in. By days 6 and 7 day time highs will be in the 40s
and 50s with night time lows in the teens and 20s.

Aviation...
middle level clouds associated with upper trough should move through
north and central Georgia this morning. Skies should be mostly clear this
afternoon. Visibility will be unrestricted. Winds southwest to west
5 to 10kt this morning...increasing around 16z to northwest 15 to
20kt and gusty as secondary surface front moves across the forecast
area.
