Area forecast discussion 
National Weather Service San Joaquin Valley - Hanford California 
456 am PST Thursday Jan 8 2009 


Discussion...much of the stratus over the valley eroded during 
the evening except along the east side and south end. Areas of 
fog have developed under the clear skies with some locally dense 
patches beginning to form. The fog should further thicken and 
spread during the morning and lift into another stratus layer 
today ahead of an approaching frontal system. Models weaken 
this system as they sweep it southeast across interior central 
California this afternoon and evening. Forecasts at this time suggest 
the precipitation will remain north and east of the district and 
probability of precipitation for today and tonight have been reduced to only very slight 
chances...mainly over the higher elevations. The system is not 
expected to scour out the valley and skies there are prognosticated to 
be mainly cloudy...while mostly sunny elsewhere. 


An upper level high pressure ridge will then build over the 
region through the middle of next week while surface high pressure 
settles into the Great Basin...creating a moderate offshore flow 
and maintaining a dry forecast over the district with a general 
warming trend during the period. The valley is however expected 
to settle back in under a blanket of stratus which will keep 
afternoon highs generally a bit below climatology.

Aviation...across the central and south San Joaquin Valley and the 
foothills of the southern Sierra Nevada and lower Tehachapi 
Mountains...mainly MVFR conditions with areas of IFR conditions in 
stratus and mist/haze through 00z Friday with local LIFR in the 
valley through 18z today. Otherwise...VFR conditions will prevail 
across the central California interior through 12z Friday.

on Thursday January 8 2009... unhealthy for sensitive groups in 
Kern County. Fireplace/wood stove burning is prohibited in Kern 
County.
