Area forecast discussion...corrected
National Weather Service Las Vegas Nevada
330 am PST Thursday Jan 8 2009

Corrected short term paragraph

Synopsis...high pressure will continue through late today which
will keep dry conditions and warmer temperatures over the area. A
weak front will cross the area tonight and Friday morning. This will
usher in slightly cooler temperatures Friday and Saturday along with
an increase in north winds. The strongest winds will occur down the
Colorado River valley Friday afternoon through the weekend.
&&

Short term...satellite shows clear skies across the forecast area
early this morning under a ridge of high pressure. Little change
needed to forecast as models consistent in evolution of pattern next
few Days. Ridge will shift east today which will open the door for
trough approaching the Pacific northwest coast to move inland into
the northern rockies and northern Great Basin by late afternoon.
Trough continues east tonight before digging southeast across
eastern Utah/western Colorado Friday. For our area models have been
getting progressively drier and this looks reasonable based on
narrowing of moisture plume feeding into trough off the northern
California coast. So have removed the mention of precipitation from
all zones with this package. Cold front associated with trough will
move southeast across south central Nevada/Inyo County tonight
reaching Las Vegas early Friday morning. As surface high builds into
northern Utah and support aloft with 850/700 mb winds phase
together north winds will increase throughout the day
Friday...especially locales that favor north winds like the Colorado
River valley. Support for north winds continues down the Colorado
River valley through Saturday. A lake Wind Advisory looks probable
Friday and maybe even Saturday. Today will be the warmest day of the
next three. Did bump up temperatures a few degrees Friday and
Saturday as cold air advection behind front looks less
impressive.

Long term...high pressure is expected over the western Continental U.S. Days 4
through 7 bringing dry...mainly clear conditions to the region. A
north/south surface pressure gradient is forecast to remain over the
area Sunday through early Wednesday which will continue gusty north
winds over much of the area. The strongest winds will be in north to
south oriented channels such as the Colorado River valley.
Temperatures are expected to be at or slightly above normal.
&&

Aviation...for McCarran...winds will be light and variable through
this evening with variable high clouds at or above 20k feet. A cold front is
expected to pass through the valley early Friday bringing gusty
north winds that will continue into the weekend.

For the rest of southern Nevada...northwest Arizona...and southeast
California...generally light and variable winds expected through
this afternoon except across the Sierra where westerly winds will
increase as a weak system moves into the West Coast. A cold front
will bring gusty north winds to the northern regions tonight and to
the central and southern areas on Friday. Sky cover will consist of
variable high clouds at or above 20kft.
&&

Vef watches/warnings/advisories...
Nevada...none.
Arizona...none.
California...none.
